The upcoming new MkVII Golf GTI is rumoured to be lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, the outgoing MkVI, it looks set to benefit from a new track pack as well. The factory-fitted pack will, among other upgrades, reportedly add a boost to power and replace the brake-based XDS electronic differential with a proper limited-slip diff.
The information was reported by Car and Driver, which also claims the new MkVII Golf GTI will go on sale in Europe next summer but won’t reach Asia shores until early 2014.
The new track pack is said to be designed for European markets, so it’s unclear if the rest of the world will even be offered the option.
There won’t be any weight-saving mods--those will be reserved for the new Golf R--but the MkVII Golf’s switch to the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform means the new GTI should already weigh in close to 200 pounds less than the current model.
As for the standard package, expect a similar formula to the current model, which means a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine sending drive to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or optional DSG dual-clutch unit. Peak output should rise slightly from the current model’s 200-horsepower rating, with most reports putting the final figure somewhere around the 220-horsepower mark.
