Foursquare Updates to fight being absolete

Foursquare's is coming up with a new Android app, adding in some latest motion effects and integrating a few of its month's iOS tweaks. That first feature, best known in the video community as the "Ken Burns effect," animates location header images with panning and zoom. You can still scroll through the top five photos from each venue, but images up top won't stop moving until you head over to the full-screen gallery tool. Other cosmetic adjustments include a refreshed sidebar, complete with avatar, and an updated profile page that matches the iOS equivalent. In a blog post today, Foursquare also referenced faster load times, though we didn't notice much of a difference in a quick side-by-side test. Enhanced performance or not, the new version is clearly an improvement. It's available today on Google Play.

Super Awesome Project

One random tweet, that was all it took to start an awesome project. One insane Australian auto enthusiast and his bizzare nutty friend from Romania made all our childhood dreams come true by building an amazing hot rod out of Legos. Yupp, you read that right, it was built from Legos. It actually runs — on air — and the fact that it isn’t any faster than a bicycle does nothing to diminish its brilliance.

Both guys used more than 500,000 Legos, along with a set of tires, some load-bearing bits, and gauges, to build the suitably named Super Awesome Micro Project. Powering this yellow beast are a four orbital engines with a total of 256 pistons — all made with Legos — driven by compressed air. They can get the hot rod up to 18 mph. It could go faster, but “We were scared of a Lego explosion so we drove it slowly,” said Sammartino.

The build took place in Romania before the Super Awesome Micro Project  was shipped to Australia for its debut.

Hyundai Veloster from HELL for STREET use.

Hyundai suprise everyone with its one of a kind Veloster that was showcased at the SEMA show recently, this Veloster is said to be the most powerful Veloster Turbo designed for the street. It’s been developed together with tuning firm Fox Marketing and have a very hefty 370 hp engine inside.

The stock standard Veloster In-line 1.6 litre Turbocharged engine is already producing around 201 hp, but the guys at Fox have gone crazy with a new turbocharger, front-mount intercooler, water/methanol injection system, high-flow exhaust and an ECU retune. This brings output to the aforementioned 370 horsepower, when running on 101-octane performance fuel.

To make sure the car also handles well, it’s been upgraded with fully-adjustable coil-over suspension, a strut brace and sway bars. There are also new brakes consisting of six-piston front calipers with carbon fiber ducting and 13.6-inch wavy-cut rotors. Four-piston calipers are used at the rear.

Exterior modifications give the Veloster Turbo an aggressive demeanor that perfectly complements the engine and chassis upgrades. In the cabin, Fox has added racing seats from Takata, four-point harnesses and custom steel bases.

The car will be presented at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas from November 5. It will be joined by a number of other tuned Hyundais including an EGR Group Veloster Turbo, a Bisimoto Genesis Coupe and a JP Edition Genesis Coupe.

KIA Prototype of a GT car

This four-door coupe design study was revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. It’s built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture and features a very swoopy body with design cues that wouldn’t look out of place on a Jaguar. It could go on sale in 2016.

The concept was powered by a 3.3-liter direct-injected turbo-V6 belting out 395 ponies. The car’s engine was matched to a technically advanced eight-speed automatic transmission.

Supposedly the production version of this striking car will still feature a four-door coupe body but will lose its fire-breathing V6. A modest turbo-four would likely be the engine of choice. Alternative powertrains are also distinct possibilities; a diesel or hybrid system could find a home ahead of the firewall.

Will this “lowly” Kia have the goods to compete with cars like the Audi A7, Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class or BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe? Who knows, but one thing’s almost a given, if or when the GT makes it into production it will certainly be more affordable than these high-brow competitors

Which iPad should you go for?

Apple recently launched its fifth-generation iPad, and not suprisingly with a new name (credits to leaks throughout the net): the iPad Air. It also gave us a new iPad mini with a Retina display. The fact that the ipad2, The New ipad and the ipad mini is still in the market, that leaves four devices with multiple configurations. That’s a lot of iPad. So which one is worth the money? We’ve got a pick for you in both the mini and full-size model.

Don’t buy the iPad 2 or original iPad mini. Sure, they’re less expensive than the newer models, but not enough so that it’s worth missing out on the A7 chipsets, Retina displays, and new enclosures. Get one of last year’s models today, and you’re making a lousy purchasing decision. Go new.

Storage is an easy call too. Unless you plan to use the iPad as your primary computer (if you do, go big), get the 16GB model. Odds are you won’t be using it to take hundreds or thousands of photos like you might with a phone that eat up storage. Yes, you may have to sync it regularly, but for most people 16GB should be plenty of space.

Next up: Wi-Fi-only, or Wi-Fi + Cellular? This is trickier. The iPad Mini is amazingly portable. It’s small enough to fit in the occasional pant pocket. It’s great on the train. It’s great on a plane. It’s the ultimate driving machine (sorry BMW) because it doubles as a fantastic navigation system — or at least it can be if you get the version with cellular connectivity. Yes, LTE adds $130 to the price tag, plus what you’ll pay for service. But we find the mini to be so portable that without the LTE option it feels almost hobbled.

Not so with the iPad Air. Sure, it’s still light and portable, but not like the mini. If you really need a connection, odds are, you’ll use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. If you can’t use your phone as a hotspot, you may want to consider getting a portable hotspot instead (the Karma hotspot is a really good deal, for example).

So our final takeaway? If you’re getting the mini, go for the 16GB LTE Retina Display model. If you’re going full-sized, you’re going to want the 16GB iPad Air that’s Wi-Fi only. You’re on your own when it comes to picking out the color.

SiRi Exits the BETA zone

When the iPhone 4S was launched nearly two years ago, Apple introduced an assistant called the Siri voice control system to its customers. At the time which was not so long ago, Siri was a gimmicky feature at best, being released to the mass market with bugs, a highly-computerized voice, sluggish content loading, and unreliable/unpredictable servers. In addition, Siri of 2011 was short on user compatibility, only launching with knowledge of English, French, and German. Apple certainly did not deny the early issues with Siri: the company launched the product in “beta,” a tag that has remained on the software ever since.

Since 2011, Apple has been slowly improving the functionality and the service of its assistant. In early 2012, Siri gained support for Japanese, and with iOS 6 in late 2012, the service added support for several new languages and capabilities. With iOS 7, Siri has been given a redesigned user-interface, new functionality, and all-new voices. Many of the server errors and lengthy processing time issues that riddled the product in its early days have now disappeared; and it seems that Apple agrees. With the upcoming launch of iOS 7, it appears that Apple will finally be taking Siri out of “beta.”

Late this past week, Apple updated its Siri webpages to drop all references to the product being in beta. Prior to this past week, the bottom of the Siri informational page read:

Siri is available in Beta only on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad with Retina display, iPad mini, and iPod touch (5th generation) and requires Internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary by area. Cellular data charges may apply.

Now the page reads (dropping beta):

Siri is available on iPhone 4s or later, iPad with Retina display, iPad mini, and iPod touch (5th generation) and requires Internet access. Siri may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary by area. Cellular data charges may apply.

Additionally, Apple has removed its Siri FAQs website (Google Cache) that explained some of the finite details of the service and the supported languages. Because Siri seems to no longer be in beta, perhaps Apple feels that the service now performs well enough to not need an additional page of explanations.

New Range Rover Evoque 2014

The latest nine-speed transmission will be standard across the 2014 Range Rover Evoque lineup, which also received a number of other changes to help improve fuel economy and driving dynamics. Minor tweaks to the exterior styling are subtle while the British automaker has also added a stop-start system, which was previously unavailable on the automatic Evoque.

More fuel-saving technology that’s new include Active Driveline, which allows four-wheel-drive Evoques to operate in front-wheel drive above 22 mph. According to Range Rover, all the additions help improve fuel efficiency by as much as 11 percent compared to the 2013 model year. Inside, the 2014 Range Rover Evoque remains mostly unchanged though it will receive Land Rover’s new InControlTM system that enables the driver to trigger emergency calls automatically in the case of an accident.

Toyota Re-Calls 780,000 units

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 780,000 crossovers and hybrid sedans for the second time to fix loose rear-suspension lower arms that could cause the threads to rust and wear out.

The recall covers 2010 Lexus HS 250h hybrids and 2006-11 Toyota RAV4 crossovers. The original recall for both vehicles was launched in November, but Toyota said it received reports from dealers that some vehicles experienced the same symptoms as before. Drivers reported hearing abnormal noises from the rear of the vehicles.

The automaker, in documents submitted to regulators, said wear on the threaded part of the arm could cause the arm to separate, which could result in the loss of vehicle control and a crash.

Toyota and Lexus sent similar letters to their dealers on Tuesday, Sept. 3, notifying them of the second recall. "Upon investigation, it was discovered that some inspections were not adequate and portions of the repair procedure may not have been performed correctly," the Toyota letter stated.

Toyota said it has revised the inspection and remedy procedures and is asking owners to go to dealerships to have the revised procedures performed.

But Toyota said that because of a shortage of replacement parts, owners will be notified in phases, depending on the model year and registered locations of the vehicles. Owners will be notified beginning this month , but vehicle repairs could come as late as mid-February 2014, Toyota said.

ALPINA B3 Turbo Diesel Making Debut

At the start of the year, Alpina unveiled its B3 Bi-Turbo at the Geneva Motor Show, and now the in-house BMW tuner will feature a diesel-powered version of that same car at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Also present at the Geneva Motor Show in March from Alpina was its first SUV, the XD3 based on the BMW X3. Under the hood of the XD3 lurked a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo diesel engine with 350 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. That same powerplant will now find its way into a 3 Series model to become the Alpina D3.

Essentially a diesel variant to the B3 Bi-Turbo, the D3 will be based on the 335d xDrive and will accelerate to 62 mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds. The powerplant will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

National Icon DIED in a tragic crash!

One of the most shocking news to Malaysian sports scene was when National Hockey mainstay and former skipper Chua Boon Huat was killed in a horrific car crash this morning (approx 2.30am).

It is said that Chua was driving his Perdana V6 back from attending a function lost control of his car before colliding with the back of a lorry that was in duty to water the plants on LDP.

Chua made his debut for the National Hockey team in 1998 and remained an integral part of the squad until today. He has had several stints playing abroad and his passing could dealt a serious blow for Malaysia's bid to win the 2013 Asia Cup.

Andy Carrol joins Hammers

West Ham United have completed the signing of former England striker Andy Carroll from Liverpool for a club record fee £15m. Carroll, 24, cost Liverpool £35m but was loaned out to West Ham in August, scoring seven goals in 24 games.

The former Newcastle United forward has signed a six-year contract, with an option for a further two years. "It's fantastic for me to be here. I really enjoyed last season, and that shows in me coming back and making it permanent," Carroll said.

The transfer fee was agreed in May, but the former England international was said to be unsure about a move before a World Cup year. Carroll added: "The fans, the lads and the club itself have been great to me, and what I wanted to do was come back here and play football.
"Since the end of the season I've had a lot of time to think, I've missed it and that's why I'm back.
"Getting promoted the season before last, then finishing where we did - we did great, and it can only get better for us.

"The way the club's being run, obviously getting the new stadium and everything like that, it's only going up." Carroll, who made his England debut in 2010 and has won nine caps, was signed by Kenny Dalglish for Liverpool on transfer deadline day in January 2011, for what remains a record fee for a British player. He had impressed by scoring 31 times for his boyhood club Newcastle in 81 appearances, but his time at Anfield was short-lived.

Introducing the BMW 4 Series

BMW has unveiled a new model and it’s called the 4 Series. Long rumoured to be in the works and first shown as a concept at the 2013 Detroit motor show, BMW has finally taken the wraps off the all-new production model. Launched as the latest generation of BMW’s sporty mid-size Coupe, the German car maker says the 4 Series Coupe “embodies the essence of dynamics and aesthetic appeal in the premium segment.”

The new nomenclature brings the new 4 Series Coupe in line with the larger 6 Series and 8 Series Coupes. The two-door 4 Series Coupe will be offered as both a 428i, featuring a TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre 4-cylinder and as a 435i with the Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline six. The 2.0-litre engine produces 240hp and 346Nm; the 3.0-litre engine produces 300hp and 407Nm. Both will be available with a standard 8-speed sport automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Both will also be offered with a choice of rear-wheel drive or with optional xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system.

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe is visibly larger in width and wheelbase than the outgoing BMW 3 Series Coupe, and its stretched silhouette sits considerably lower to the road. Its lower suspension brings the car’s centre of gravity down to below 500mm, giving it the lowest centre of gravity of any car in the current BMW line-up. This, together with its BMW-typical short overhangs, long hood and set-back passenger compartment with flowing roofline, give the BMW 4 Series Coupe a visual balance.

The car’s striking front end – with its characteristic BMW design features, such as the double-kidney grille, four round headlights and a large air intake in the front apron – is keen to display its family ties with the BMW 3 Series.

New elements of the BMW 4 Series Coupe are the Air Breathers, which are positioned rearwards of the front wheel arches to reduce drag. The coupe’s muscular wheel arches and wide track give an aggressive stance, with its prominent horizontal lines. All the controls central to driving are arranged ergonomically around the driver ensuring comfortable access to all functions.

In the rear compartment, contoured seats continue the sporty theme of the BMW 4 Series Coupe. Recessed head restraints and broad, continuously molded side supports give the rear bench the appearance of two individual seats. Customers can choose among Sport, Luxury or M Sport Lines.

All three allow visible individualisation of the car’s exterior and interior appearance.

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe uses a combination of driver assistance systems and mobility services (available as standard or optional under the BMW ConnectedDrive banner) to increase safety, comfort and infotainment usage ease and convenience.

Among the highlights are a new generation of BMW Navigation System, which offers extra capability, sharper graphics and 3D elements for the map display, the full-color BMW Head-Up Display; Driving Assistant Plus, which warns the driver of a potential collision with a pedestrian, the intelligent; glare-free LED High Beam Assistant and the latest iteration of BMW Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go.

The 4 Series will be rolled out to market later this year.

Aston Martin announced today that it will conduct a recall practice for 689 of its cars because the throttle pedal arm issue. It is said that the throttle pedal arm might break at certain forces. The affected cars were mainly the one that was built between May 14, 2012 and April 10, 2013.

Fiat 500 Gucci Edition is back.

In this 2013, Fiat is bringing back the 500 by Gucci Edition that comes with a complete new looks both for the interior and exterior. The price is rumoured to be around $23,750.

On the outside, the 500 by Gucci gets unique style thanks to chrome accents on the mirrors, door handles and hood spear, along with 15-inch aluminum wheels that are color-keyed to match the exterior paint color. A green-red-green stripe can be found on all of these cars, either running down the side of the car or over the top. The two paint choices for the exterior are black and white, though the technical names are Gucci Nero and Gucci Bianco. Finally, chrome Gucci badging including Gucci badged hubcaps complete the look.

Turning to the interior, the Gucci edition 500 gets leather wrapped seats along with leather accents, chic embroidery, white and black accents and “velvety varnish” on the instrument panel. Two-tone interiors are available, still with just black and white, and will be designed based on the exterior color of the car. Black cars get mainly white interiors with black accents, while white cars get the opposite.

The Fiat 500 by Gucci starts $23,750, while the 2013 Fiat 500c by Gucci Edition model starts at $27,750. Expect to see the 500 by Gucci in dealerships starting in spring of 2013 for a limited time.

Waze is now part of Google!

Google has finalized its acquisition of the world famous crowd-sourced navigation and traffic app, Waze. Waze is a free app that uses the input of trusted community members to update maps in real time to help other users avoid delays and traffic congestion.

For now on, it looks like the Waze app will remain independent, bolstered by Google’s search capabilities, while Google Maps will kick it up a notch by utilizing Waze’s real-time, crowd-sourced traffic update features, which it rolled out in February. Waze CEO Noam Bardin elaborated in a blog post:

“Nothing practical will change here at Waze. We will maintain our community, brand, service and organization,” Bardim wrote. The Waze team decided that partnering with Google would better serve the Waze community than remaining independent and eventually IPO-ing, which “often shifts attention to bankers, lawyers and the happiness of Wall Street.”

Waze has been the object of numerous acquisition rumors over the past few months. Besides Google, other tech giants like Facebook and Apple reportedly courted the startup.

Sony unveils its latest PS4

Sony is a company that is known for their cutting edge hardware design that is created in a way to be aesthetically pleasing yet serve the purpose of a dedicated game console. The whole console is enclosed in an elegant looking black rectangular that stands vertically on nicely designed hinges. It bears resemblance to its biggest competitor, the Xbox One, but it is more slim and looks elegant and poised. On the front there is the usual PS logo joined by the obligatory Blu-Ray drive. On the back are the usual connecting ports for the TV set and additional controllers and devices that can plug into the PS4 system.

The internal components of the Sony PS4 are truly amazing and obviously carefully chosen to create a great and powerful gaming console. As Sony’s executives say, the PS4 is based on a supercharged PC architecture with an X86 processor that has 8 CPU cores, enhanced GPU card, and 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. More than enough for an immersive gaming experience.

One of the few hardware things that Sony showed back in February was the new controller called simply the Dualshock 4. The controller is an evolution on the previous controller shipped with the PS3, with more rounded corners, softer textures and a matte black finish. The biggest change in the new controller is the inclusion of the new touch trackpad borrowed from the PS Vita, and it is there to take advantage of new ways of gaming with swipe gestures and motions.

The controller also has a light bar on the front which is used to communicate with the actual console via a sensor called the Playstation Eye. The light bar detects when controllers are switched during a multiplayer game and other in-game motion controls.

One exciting new feature that the Playstation 4 will offer consumers is the ability to run their old games, a significant difference from Xbox’s strategy that doesn’t provide backwards compatibility. Additionally, the Playstation 4 will come with a new feature in gaming called game streaming. Sony is using it’s new acquisition, Gaikai. It will allow users to use a game library hosted on Sony game servers. Gamers can also share videos of their own gameplay with the integrated share button on the Dualshock 4 controller.

On their E3 press conference, Sony showcased several highly anticipated game titles that will debut on the new PS4. With Sony targeting the Playstation 4 towards gamers that take gaming seriously, it really needed the support of the game studios that developed these games. There are a couple of well known titles there like “Destiny” , “Final Fantasy XV”, “Kingdom Hearts III”, “The Dark Sorcerer” among others. Other non exclusive titles, that will appear both on the Xbox One and the PS4 are “Watchdogs”, “Mad Max” and the “Elder Scrolls”

VW and Audi Re-calls some 26,000 cars in Australia

German auto giant Volkswagen (VW) on Wednesday recalled nearly 26,000 vehicles in Australia and Audi followed suit with 6,000 cars due to a gearbox problem that could cause a loss of power while driving.

The recalls follow growing safety worries sparked by the death in Australia of a woman while in a 2008 Golf. The 32-year-old's car slowed and was hit from behind by a truck on a Melbourne motorway in 2011, a coroner's inquest heard last month.

The news sparked complaints from other VW owners whose cars had also cut out or stopped on busy roads. "In isolated cases, an electronic malfunction in the control unit inside the gearbox mechatronics may result in a power interruption," VW's Australian branch said in a statement.

The models affected include Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy cars produced between June 2008 and September 2011.

Last week, VW Australia managing director John White said the company "stands by the quality of our cars and integrity of our engineering excellence".

On Wednesday, he said replacement of the gearbox unit would be free of charge and "owners can continue to drive their vehicles as usual until their appointment".

The move follows similar recalls in other countries, including China where more than 380,000 vehicles were recalled in March over gearbox defects.

Audi, whose parent company is VW, followed suit and recalled more than 6,000 hatchbacks in Australia due to the same gearbox concerns.

Spokeswoman Anna Burgdorf said A1 and A3 models built between 2008 and 2011 and powered by turbocharged, four-cylinder 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre engines were affected.

Webber slams backmarkers for causing his race

Mark Webber slammed Caterham driver Giedo van der Garde as "a pay driver with no mirrors" after the pair's collision during the Canadian Grand Prix. The Australian, speaking immediately after the race, blamed the Dutchman for turning in on him at the hairpin while being lapped.

The stewards hit van der Garde with a 10-second stop/go penalty for the incident, with the Dutchman later being given a five-place grid penalty for the British GP after clashing with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber.

The incident happened on lap 37, shortly after Webber had passed Lewis Hamilton to run in the clear air he needed, and the Australian believes it handed Fernando Alonso the initiative in the battle for third.

"We finally got past him [Hamilton] and the car was happy then, everything started to cool down and we could get into a rhythm until we caught a pay driver with no mirrors and then lost the front wing," said Webber.

"The car was very damaged after that. You can't have a bleeding car with Fernando around you. "They [backmarkers] are doing their own race as well, I've been there in a Minardi but you need to look in your mirrors."

Van der Garde believes that the stop/go penalty was harsh and that Webber made his move from too far back. "From my view, he was quite far behind me for the hairpin," van der Garde told AUTOSPORT. "I turned in and he hit me. "Before the braking zone, I saw him and [decided] I would let him past on the next straight.

"It is tough, but I am one of the fairest drivers out there and I don't hit anybody.

"I will learn from the mistakes but I think the penalties are a bit harsh.

"I feel a bit sorry for Mark - it was not my intention to hit him."

When Webber's comments about him being a pay driver who does not use his mirrors were put to him by AUTOSPORT, van der Garde said he thought Webber was being "hard".

Canadian GP: Marshal was run over by a crane

FIA has announced that one of the Canadian Grand Prix marshal has died following an incident at the Montreal track on Sunday's Canadian GP.

The marshal was helping to retrieve Esteban Gutierrez's crashed car following the race when he tripped while trying to retrieve a dropped radio and fell right under the wheels of a mobile crane.

The marshal was not sighted by the driver of the crane, and was run over by the mobile crane resulting in serious injuries.

After being taken to the circuit's medical centre he was transferred by helicopter to the Sacre-Coeur hospital in Montreal for treatment in its traumatology department. However, despite all necessary efforts to help him, the marshal succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.

The unidentified man is the third marshal to have been killed since 2000.

At the Italian Grand Prix in 2000, Paolo Ghislimberti died after being struck by a wheel that flew over the barriers after an opening lap crash.
